History of Communication

Communication is innovation.
Communication through technology is fundamental.
Communication has become crucial to close the Digital Divide.

Talking

The first way people communicated was verbal. First people would use grunts and sounds. Then they developed words to more clearly speak.

Cave/Wall Painting

The second way of communication was cave/wall paintings.  Early Man would use the powder from colored rocks and draw/paint with the rocks.  They would draw/paint anything that had to do with animals. The oldest painting Geologists have found are 40, 000 years old, which dates back to the Paleolithic Era. This tells scientists two things, Homo Sapiens must have drawn the pictures because at that time they were the only animals that could grab things and had the mental capacity to make pictures of things around them.    

First Writing Tablet(Cuneiform)

The third way of communicate was the Cuneiform.  A cuneiform is the earliest known, writing system made up of symbols and characters. The cuneiform was the most widespread and historically significant writing system in the Ancient Near East. The Mesopotamians invented the cuneiform in 3500s BC.

Ancient Scribes!

Many Ancient Civilizations used Scribes wto write down things about economy and historical events, as far back as 3500s BC. Ancient Scribes were always men. The Mesopotamians would send boys from rich families to school to become a scribe. 

Ink and Quill

Humans discovered an easier writing method . People were forced to use cursive, because if they didn't the ink would leak out of the quill, and that would be a big mess! Cursive was much better than print because you barely lift your quill from the paper, so the ink would not leak out. 

Telegraph/ Morse Code

The electric telegraph is a device that was used as a communication system. that transmitted electric  over wires from place to place.  The first electric telegraph was  invented in the USA by Harrison Dyar.  A standard  language of signals was later invented by Samuel Morse and became commonly known as Morse Code.   This allowed signals  to be  translated into messages.

Type Writers

Type Writers was a much easier way to produce words/ to communicate.  The inventor of the first typewriter was a man named Christopher Latham Sholes. Christopher invented the type writer in 1867. Type Writers were used for letters, important events, and notes.

Carrier Pigeons

 Carrier Pigeons were used to carry messages in Word War I and World War II.  Another word for Carrier Pigeon is Homing Pigeon At one point carrier pigeons were used to deliver medication.  If you trained you pigeon very well it could carry up to 75 g (2.5 oz) on their backs.

Telephone

The telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876. The telephone is a telecommunications device, which can transmit and receive sounds.  This enabled humans to speak directly to another from long distances.

Radio

The radio provided a means of mass communication. Mass communication is when hundreds of thousands are listening to the same thing you are listing to. The 1st Radio Station was established in 1897.  Radio was and still is used to communicate new and to entertain.

Television (TV)

TV is also used for mass communication.  When TV first came out in 1921, it was black and white and you could barely hear what the person was saying because the sound was muffled.  But as the years passed by, TV became better. And now we have great quality, picture and sound. TV is also used to communicate news and to entertain.                                                                                                                                 

Computers

Computers  have combined; Radio with podcast on itunes: Television with websites like, hulu.com and Fancast.com: Type writers with Microsoft Word/ keyboard:Cave/ Wall painting  with Graphic Design Applications (Paint): the Telegraph with email: and the telephone with Voice Over IP.

Cellphones

One of the newest way of communication is with cellphones.  Cellphones are portable telephones.  You can take your cellphone were ever you go.  And now people can call and talk to you even when your not at home.  They can also text, whch doesn't require talking.
